Caroline Boyle-Turner

Art History Professor

Caroline Boyle-Turner was born in Chicago and holds a BA in French Literature from Beloit College, a Masters Degree from Case Western Reserve University, and a PhD in Art History from Columbia University. She was also a Fulbright Fellow in France.

Caroline lived in Paris for eight years, working at the Centre Pompidou and teaching at the American University in Paris, and then in The Hague for five years, working as a guest curator at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. She also taught Art History at Rhode Island School of Design for 11 years. 

Caroline has written eight books on Gauguin and his followers. Her latest book, Gauguin and the Marquesas: Paradise found?, was published in 2016, based on research carried out in the Marquesas, Tahiti, and Paris over 15 years. Her latest project was as the Curator for an exhibition on the art of Paul Sérusier, which was held at the National Museum of Kazakhstan, Astana, in the summer of 2018. She is also the president of the Paul Sérusier Committee, responsible for authenticating and writing the catalogue raisonné of his works.

Caroline wanted to bring Contemporary Art and artists to Pont-Aven, the village in Brittany (France) where Gauguin lived and developed so many of his avant garde ideas, and to bring art history alive for young art students. So she founded an art school in 1994 offering courses in Studio Art and Art History. She retired from running the school in 2008 in order to return to teaching, writing, and lecturing. She and her husband Hank live full-time in Pont-Aven and travel often to Polynesia to do research and to lecture aboard the m/s Paul Gauguin. They have two grown children, one a diplomat and the other an artist.
