Maurice Bligh

Inventor, Historian, Descendant of "Captain" Bligh

Maurice Bligh is a man with mission: to set the record straight about his famous forebear, who is widely known as “Captain Bligh” of the legendary HMS Bounty. With this goal in mind, he has been following in his great-great-great-grandfather’s footsteps, or rather his wake, for more than 45 years.

According to Maurice, the “Captain” was actually Vice-Admiral William Bligh, RN. FRS. (1754-1817) — and that numerous novels and two Mutiny on the Bounty Hollywood movies have grossly maligned this man who, on several counts, was a British national hero. He stood among the great names during a fantastic era of exploration in the opening up of the mighty Pacific Ocean. And he was a battle-honoured friend of Vice-Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson.

A retired patented inventor, Maurice is no stranger to the South Pacific himself. When he was only eight or nine years old, he was given a short-wave radio receiver and had, as he puts it, “the world at his fingertips.” Listening to Radio Australia motivated him to send a letter about his ancestor, who was also the 4th Governor of the former New South Wales colony, to the station. The station broadcast his letter and told him that one day, when he grew up, he must visit Australia and learn more.

In his mid-twenties, in 1970, Maurice set out by sea from England and followed the approximate route of the Bounty. He researched en route and logged 36,000 nautical miles (equivalent to 34,175 miles over land) during on a circumnavigation voyage of discovery that lasted nearly a year and a half.

One early morning, when the mountain tips of Tahiti rose majestically from the blue, blue waters, he recalls that the moment was a lifelong dream come true. Being there, he maintains, “brought history to life.”

We hope you’ll join Maurice aboard The Gauguin as he reveals historic truths about Admiral William Bligh, a three-time visitor to Tahiti and the South Seas. He will also explain how Hollywood got it all wrong: there never was never a ship called HMS Bounty!
